Hello.

"Bad Record Index" error message in "Define Styles".

What happens and how to repair this?

Tnx!

Most Bad Record Index errors are due to still being linked to a text document. After you place a text document, go to the Link Manager and Unlink it. If you can get into the habit of doing this you shouldn't run into this problem anymore.

How to fix it, you ask?

I found the following methods on a site called everythingmacintosh.com, but it also lists fixes for Windows versions

Diagnostic Recompose:
Press Option+Shift(Mac) or Control+Shift(Win) and then choose Type>Hyphenation. After it's gone through its paces do a Save As... This feature is a group of functions that checks the integrity of some structures within a Pagemaker publication.

Slide Show:
While pressing the Shift key, choose Layout>Go To Page. After all pages have displayed at least once, press any key to stop the slide show. Click on the Master Page icons to display the master pages. Click and hold the mouse button on the master page icons (Mac) or Right-click (Win) and choose master page from the pop-up menu. After you have displayed all master pages, Save As... This feature repairs link information as it's going through the process.

The Hard Way:
Manually copy the pages into a new publication.

I hope one of these ways work for you. The page that I got the above info from also has the following information:

A publication may become damaged due to low disk space, low system resources, or system conflicts. When a system error, freeze, or crash occurs while Pagemaker is reading from or writing to disk, the open publication may become damaged. Working directly off a network or removable drive increases the likelihood that communication errors will occur and damage a publication. Damage in a publication may also be caused by a damaged style, font, indexed item, link, or object. Copying and pasting grouped text frames may also lead to damage in the publication.
