I had a file with an extension that was not associated with any particular program, so I right clicked went to open with chose excel and in advertently forgot to uncheck always use selected program to open this kind of file. Now every program that has this extension, tries to open with excel. I realize that I can open files with this extension with other programs by choosing open with and choosing another program, but I want to reset this type of file so that I get the generic logo and not associated with any file. How do I reset this file type to not be associated with any type of program and when clicked on, I will get the box asking if I want to search the web for a program?

Open Windows Explorer, and click on Tools->Folder Options and select the File Types tab.

In the scroll box look for the extension of the file type you wish to modifiy.

Then click on the Delete button, to remove the association.
O.k your way out.

The file type will once again have the standard unknown file icon. and will ask you what to do when you double click on it.
