Today I woke up and tried to boot up my computer. I run XP on this system and it got to the point where it would normally bring up the profiles screen but then it shut off and reboot. Upon this reboot, it comes up with the "Safe mode, last good config, start windows normally", etc screen, and I tried all of them with no go, and occasionally I got a "A S.M.A.R.T. error has been detected".

With that, I get the feeling that the hard drive is going, and it's under warranty so that's a plus, but there is still some data that I can't get whiped. Right now I have no way of knowing whether the data is retrievable or no, but I need to find out.

First of all, is there anything I can do to get the computer back into Windows XP (so that I may burn things onto CDs; this would be ideal)? I have been told to disable the smart option in the bios, but I can't find anything with that name (or anything similar).

Secondly, if it is required that I must slave the drive to another system to retrieve this data, must it also be a Windows XP system? I know FAT32 is run on our Windows 98 machine, but I don't know if Win98 can read it, I'm not that knowledgable on that type of stuff. If it requires an XP system, I can still make do with that, although it's harder and more difficult (the XP system isn't mine, and the owner doesn't seem so thrilled with the idea, and I don't want to do it unless I really have to).

And lastly, if you can think of anything that I haven't thought of, the help would be much appreciated.

One last thing, if it requires that I slave it to the Win 98 system, can you please offer me instructions on how to do so?

Go into BIOS and disable "stop on errors". Reboot and get your files off immediatly! The last drive I had that did this booted two more times and then died.

Windows 98 wont recognize the NTFS, but there's a free utility that , when installed WILL allow you to read the data, (no writes allowed, Read Only)

best just to slave to an XP sys if you can....if not use the tool above and burn CDs, use atleast MODE 2, so the filenames are longer than 8.3 DOS names(they'll be 30+ characters long)

Unkook Power cables completely
Take out drive;
Open 98 box
Put the Drive as Slave to Primary Master (look on Board for stamp designating Primary) place it on second on cable (the one open connector)...set the jumper on the drive as SLAVE.(read XP drive's manu. instructs for slave jumper setting)....Same for the 98 drive, unless there was already a Slave present....In which case you can skip this next step as well..Go into BIOS of 98 and Enable IDE Primary Slave ,and set to AUTO....fire it up.
