I have win98 second edition running on a desktop . Quickbook pro installs on it no problems but when I try it install it on an acer 520iT laptop running win98 second edition I get a general protection fault in isinst30 in module _ins0433._mp at 0015:000039b5 and the install bombs out . does anyone know what the cause could be ?

The install program.

Okay, that was uncalled for. But I wanted to bump this to the top in a clever way.

If the install program works on a desktop computer with the same os then it must be related to the acer laptop causing the install program to bomb . What would cause the install program to bomb on the laptop ?

Could it be the cd-drive in the laptop? Has that laptop had similar problems with other cd-roms?

How much harddrive space is there on the laptop, enough to copy the cd to it and install from there?

Tried copying cd to hard drive - result was the same error came up . not sure on space on hard drive . Should have heaps on it . Won't install from copy on server either across network to laptop gets same result .. Did complete image restore of Laptop from CD this worked ok .

Did you check your CD for scratches? Do you have an Antivirus program running on laptop? maybe in the BIOS?

I think I might have found the solution to this strange behavior . A program called mswheel.exe interfers with the install program . Windows 98 supports drivers for wheel functionality for intellipoint and logitech wheel mice . See for more information on this unusual behavior .

Solution : Copy entire install Cd to laptop and then restart laptop . Press f8 and select safe mode . Now run install program from hard drive . Driver that is interferring with install now not loaded and running . Install occurs fault free . Reboot as normal .
I finally figured this out just thought someone else may come across the same situation and wonders how to get around it . Thanks to those who answered my question .
