Just a quick question

my setup is 2 computers connected via a crossover cable, both running windows 2000 and norton internet security 2002. The cable modem is connected via usb. what else can i do to prevent hacking. would a hub help?

thanks

matthew

on the computer that has the internet connection... rightclick on the network properties for the USB modem and be sure that File and Print sharing is turned off.

Also be sure that you do not have Internet Information Server (IIS) installed on that computer.

go to c:\winnt\system32\ and rightclick on CMD.EXE and select properties - security. Add authenticated users with all the boxes checked and remove everyone and system.

this should be enough to keep 99% of people off your computer.

a hub does absolutely nothing for security.

Unless 'lodown' is referring to one of those mini-firewall/hub appliances, such as the Linksys Cable/DSL Router, or something like that. I recommend a method like this because it physically partitions your Windows computers from the web, so that no one from the outside can directly connect to an internal IP address. The lowest-cost Linksys router is only around $80, and has a nice browser-based utility for configuration. -------------------------------------------
