Now most of us would know what a big pain in the neck it has to be when its time to install that ol Win95 or Win98.
We also know that in most cases this requires formating the drive and doing a clean install, which leaves you scrambling for hundreds of floppies(if no CDrw, or zip/jaz/ditto), or to waste those CDs on stuff you didnt need to backup after all, mainly cuz you got in the rush of deciding what to backup, or to try to clean off those Zip disk to make room for your backup, cuz its jsut too expensive to buy a disk(i think its 17$ a disk now). But heres an option, partitioning, to most people this word reflects a horrifying past of ruining your boot records in the atempts to sucesfully use FDisk, and most would think "how would I backup my stuff to a new partitino if i have to delete the one i have now to even create new ones of smaller size", well theres plenty of utilities out there, one of the easiest to find , if you've heard of or even used linux, usally in the dosutils directory(you can find these directories at almost any public distributino sites for linux such as ftp.cdrom.com), it'll have a utility called FIPS, what this does is split your partition at the end where you'll end up having a second blank partitino of where you cut it off, of course you'd need to defragment your drive to make sure you can get as much partition space you want for the second partition. I am not certain, but i think it should be fine once it's split, or you might need to delete the second partiton, and create a new compatible type. A more expensive option(more expensive than zero $ that is), is using a Utility specially made for multiple partition tasks, My recomendatino is Partition magic 5, by PowerQuest, in it's graphical menu, you can resize the C, then create a new partition. of any type
however if you are using Win9x, always make that second partitino a Logical partition, win9x cant handle two primary partitions, unless one of them is an extended partition hosting a logical(hehe dont try to understand it, yer only given three choices when creating a new partition, logical or primary, size of partition, and type of partition)
once you got that, just reboot and you'll have a new D: drive, where you can move your stuff over to. I also used this method for installing Widnows 2000 on that 2Gig D: and now i can dual boot into Win98
if you wana know hwo to do this, its simple, when you goto install Win2k, chose clean install, in one of the optino tabs after that screen should find something like "let me chose partition to install to". and better yet, if yer weathly enough to pay about 309$, you can get VmWare from vmware.com, this way if you run either linux or NT/Win2k you can run a guest operating system such as linux under win2k, or win98 under linux, or win98 under win2k, etc etc.
i also recomend having smoe kinda rescue applicatino on both partition in case one does go out.
heres a table for some people who know the difference between types, but dont know their limits
Fat16(dos, win3.*, win95, win98, NT, Win2k it's all compatible) limited to 2 Gigs per partition
Fat32 (win98, Win2k) limited to 8Gigs
Fat32X(win98, Win2k) limited to 32Gigs
NTFS(NT, Win2k) limited to 64Gigs
EXT2(Linux) i have no idea what this is limited to

any other questions, just post it or respond to this
Oh also forgot to mention, VmWare is fully capable with a 30day trial lisence you can download. so you can still try it out, even if yer not sure if you wana buy it.
Karl
kb244@bellsouth.net
<a href=
You can also get Freemware at <A HREF=" TARGET="_new"> and not pay the $309. It's not perfect, but it works, but I highly doubt that VMWare is perfect either.
Oh yeah, ext2 is limited 16 terabytes.
Your best option in any of the above situations...Linux.
REH
hawkdogg@crosswinds.net
<a href= by Linux
Learn Linux and Leave out the Windows :)

Sorry but it seems most windows users have been crippled to the dependencies of Userfriendlyness, and have you tried VmWare also, It may not have hardware identificatino perfectly but it runs prettn dang close to an non-emulated OS. and just so you dont think i'm pro-windows and not wana goto linux, right now i had to reinstall everything due to a falty Win2k Final disk, once i a get a bigger HDD i plan to run Win98, Win2k(RC3 been the only one proven to work well for me), Mandrake 7.0 Linux, and i might try to get ahold of FreeBSD. Also since last night my HDD died, my own partitino tip helped, hehe, i moved everything to D:, formated C:, and reinstalled win98 and reinstalled stuff from D: in under an hour and a half(of course depends on what you chose to install in the win98 instalation itself).
Karl
kb244@bellsouth.net
<a href=
I went and checked out FreeMWare site, and for the version they have i came accross it's release note
"Release notes for FreeMWare 20000213 (unstable)
This code is extremely experimental, and will likely result in a system crash, and who knows what other ill effects. Don't run it on a system with any important data on it, and make liberal user of the sync command! Expect to have to use the power button.
"
apparently it's way way way down the hill from VmWare(which is acuactually stable, and almost garenteed)
Karl
kb244@bellsouth.net
<a href=
Yeah, you're right, but as it said, it's experimental, that means that it will catch up, if not pass, VMWare's stabillity and speed.
REH
hawkdogg@crosswinds.net
<a href= by Linux
Learn Linux and Leave out the Windows :)

hey you should be grateful for it, i mean they made newer versions for linux , before NT version even came out of beta stage(just goes to show you how much better linux can be, hehe, considering it will take full advantage of all Hardware)
Karl
kb244@bellsouth.net
<a href=
