Hi!

On our AIX 5.2 system we have 300+ printers defined. We use AIX print, and all queues are defined as remote printers using the rembak backend. Also our HP LaserJets, which are equipped with built-in JetDirect NICs.

A few of our LJ's located in Britain (the server is in Denmark) are causing problems. When processing, suddenly the queue goes into status CONNECT. At the same time, the printer reports READY in the display. Then it just sits there, apparently until the rembak timeout is reached (currently 10 minutes), and then it goes DOWN.

We have a job, which runs every 5 minutes, and checks for queues with status DOWN, and restarts them. Then it runs for a little while before it maybe stops again.

The decision to use AIX print and the rembak backend is based on a recommendation from IBM Denmark.

We tried to enable debug on rembak, and it produces several of the following entries, while hanging in this state:

rembak[803006] hookup: Try to connect at port 998..... errno=78: A remote host did not respond within the timeout period.

When the timeout value is reached, this is what we see:

rembak[803006] connection_timeout: ALARM signal - connection attempt timeout. errno=4: A system call received an interrupt.
rembak[803006] hookup: (WARNING) 0781-375 Connection to server failed. errno=4:
A system call received an interrupt.

What does it use port 998 for? We also saw it using port 995 while hanging.

The JetDirect NIC has been upgraded with the newest fírmware.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks
Stig
