I want to image/clone my desktop system and run it as a virtual machine on my laptop.

Before I go to the trouble of setting everything up, I was hoping that someone could answer a couple of questions:
1. Can I load VMware Server on both machines, image the desktop, and run that image on the laptop?
2. If I can create the desktop image, is there any benefit of using VMware Server over VMware Player on the laptop?

1. You don't need to put VMWare Server on your desktop, use the P2V converter to "clone" your desktop directly into a VM.

2. With VMWare Server you can create new VM's (for test boxes, or whatever). I don't know if you can do that with VMWare Player or not.

Your best bet is vm Workstation. The performance on a laptop is much better then vmware server. You cannot create vm's with vmware player. Like withanh said, use the freem vmware converter to clone your desktop to the vmware application that you are running on your laptop.
