Questions before I write Network+...

I want to write Network+ in the next couple of days but here are a few questions I have. Don't feel obligated to answer them all:

1. When enabling DNS on Win9x, why do you need to enter the HOST and DOMAIN? Do you need to do this on Win2K (I can't find this setting in Win2K)?

2. Connecting Macintosh and Windows on a network. I've never used a MAC so I'm having trouble understanding how to get MAC and Windows to talk to each other. Please fill in the blanks for me:

Mac, running Appletalk -> Win9x, running NetBEUI:

Mac, running Appletalk -> Win9x, running TCP/IP:

Mac, running TCP/IP -> Win9x, running TCP/IP:

Mac, running TCP/IP -> Win9x, running NetBeui:

I'm confused when to install PCMACLAN or Appletalk on Win9x. And, if I do install them, does this allow Win9x systems to read Mac files or do I need to install DAVE or AppleshareIP on the Mac system? So confused...

3. In a Win9x peer-to-peer network, NetBIOS names are resolved by broadcasting. Do the Win9x systems cache the results anywhere or do they always broadcast (no static entries in the HOSTS file). Do Win9x systems cache DNS entries anywhere?

4. In a Win2K network, if I disable NetBIOS over TCP/IP and have no WINS server, can Win2K still resolve NetBIOS to IP addresses?

5. What is the relationship between SONET and Optical Carriers? Does SONET define the hardware and Optical Carrier define the type of fiber? My book says about Optical Carriers, "a specification for fiber cables operating in SONET networks."

6. Does IPSec encrypt the IP header or just the payload?

7. Is the program called "NETMON" available on all Windows computers? If so, where? I can't find it.... My book says that NETMON is included with Windows.

So far, that's it....

5. Optical transmission systems are known as SONET (Synchronous Optical NETwork) in North America and SDH (Synchronous Digital Hierarchy) in the Rest of the World. Optical Carriers are typically known by their OC-x number where x is a multiple of the OC-1 rate of 51.84 Mpbs (shades of DS0). While there is a common world-wide approach to optical systems there are differences but they are accomodated within the standard. All SONET networks operate over single-mode fiber.

Thanks glister!

I wrote the Net+ today - 833 out of 900. I really wish they'd tell me which ones I got wrong. Ah well, on to Security+....

Rock ON !!!
