What's "an" doing there, instead of "a"?

I have seen this kind of grammar mainly in computer related posts and documents.

Got me, I've never pronounced Native with a leading vowel sound, but that's just me:)

It looks like it might originally have read "We have an NUL", and then sombebody did a global search and replace to eliminate the TLA...
