Question with the protected folders in server

A friend of mine is currently developing an ASP site so that registered users can login and download files. However the problem is that he's put the files in the protected folders (to avoid back door access), users who have logged in are then prompted to input server-side password whenever they want to download files. Is there a way to get around this problem? Thanks very much.
