Question, trying to use alternate/substitute parts in BOM

I am trying to find a way to have alternate parts (an either/or situation) appear on a BOM and be reflected in the product structure. A possible scenario would be having two resistor part numbers on a BOM that can be used at one location, a lead free version as well as the original "leaded" version, depending on which one was received.

Hopefully this question makes sense.

Thank you.

ifrydr,
You can do that. The only thing is that the standing cost is going to be a little higher than the cost as built. What you would end up doing is having both items on the standing bill, then remove one in the captured bill at shop order or pop order release time. This is going to be a problem if you are using MRP though.

My understanding is the Feature/Opt Config does what you want. (note: we run an older version of Macola, so I don't know if that functionality exists in your version).

Randva is correct.

Substitute parts only have functionality in the OE module -- in other words a customer must order THAT PART, not that component within a parent.

Feature Options are what you need to look at. If you need more info, post again.

Add the parts to your BOM with a quantity of Zero. If you have POP or shop floor control, edit the captured BOM before release change the Zero to 1 and change the item substitued to zero.

Be aware that NEmacGuy's solution would work, but you will create no demand for the component if you are using MRP. Costing would also be a problem. This simplified solution could work in some situations though.

If this component item could always be substituted in all BOMs you may want to consider just having one part number that you assign to the component. This decision can only be made on a case by case basis, but part classification usually only needs to go so far as what makes the part unique to your business, baring any regulatory requirements.
