for the rootvg you need to use mksysb - that will backup everthing you need

and everthing else is your decision only :)

Alex

PS not sure about /proc - don't have an AIX 5 system

i'm using veritas Netbackup. Not going to use mksysb to backup rootvg :)

Can you do a disaster recovery restore with that ?

Alex

I would do a mksysb at least once a month or sooner if you patch your system on a regular basis. If you can afford the time backup / and below, but create an exclude list for /tmp & /proc. But like Alex said is down to personal preference.

For what it's worth, my disaster recover plan (which we executed three weeks ago) includes both mksysb rebuilds and backups to TSM.

As for /proc, I guess you could send this to backup with mksysb ( I do ), but now that I think about it, I don't know how it would work. After all, it's just process info that gets lost each time you shutdown.

For DR, need to install the OS and then restore back the data, not straight forward like mksysb
