I have a linksys BEFVP41 (192.68.1.1) as my gateway to the internet. It is connected to the cable router and is also my dhcp server. I have a second linksys BEFW11S4 (192.168.1.2) wireless router uplinked behind that. My network is happy and works fine, until...

If I try to set one PC to a static address 192.168.1.50 (3 others are DHCP 192.168.1.1xx)my cable modem locks up and needs to be reset. The cable tech support says I have to have all static or all dynamic address. I know this can't be correct and am wondering if it is a matter of changing from gateway to router mode and setting up my tables????

anyone?

. router #1 with DHCP enabled]
. router #2 with DHCP disabled
. routers are connected through straight-through cables from a regular LAN port to the uplink port. Not the WAN port.

Your default static IP choices are then:

192.168.1.2 -- 192.168.1.99
192.168.1.151 -- 192.168.1.254

. You cannot have a static IP that falls withing the DHCP range of addresses.

See: I know it deals with a wireless router as the second example, but the principle is the same.

my system is in line with your comments and does not have issues related to your link. Thanks for posting however.

FYI, for others seaching through posts...

the issue was that I needed to include the dafault gateway (192.168.1.1) as well as the dns servers (available on the linksys status page) in my IP configuration of the one machne with a static IP. The fact that the cable modem was locking up I think is a separate issue and just coincidence.
