We have purchased a sharepoint server using sql server and
have created a "default" site. I was looking into using
templates, like the ones found here -

My question is it appears that when you unzip a template it creates a directory on your machine. Do I need to delete all of the existing files in our "default" site and import
these new ones in? I have access to frontpage 2003 as well, though I am not that familair with it.

Basically, how can I get these template files into sql server?

The templates on the site are for an old version of sharepoint (Sharepoint Team Services (2001)).

You are prob using WSS - Windows SharePoint Services Or SPS SharePoint Portal Server both from 2003.
This is confusing because STS still appears in a number of files shiped with WSS and SPS i believe the install file is even called sts.... something.

Templates for WSS are STP file wich you can import to the site gallary using the site-settings pages then it is posible to create site based upon those but you first needed to create a site to import the custom templates. To make sure you can use the template right on your first site you can upload the templates to the global Template Gallary using the stsadm tool (but it is a WSS tool ;)).

Alternatively you could create custom site definitions to prevent ghosting...

I suggest you search Google for those!

Greetings.

BTW microsoft has recently release a set of WSS applications (they are actually templates, but you know MS)

Templates are based on a language, make sure you have the correct installed and selected or the applications/templates wont show up.

The english languaage is needed for the Templates on that site (You can get it from a language pack if you dont have the english - US language installed)

We are using SPS SharePoint Portal Server on a 2003 machine.
Ill look for SPS SharePoint Portal Server templates via google, but if anyone can point me to any, it would be appreciated.

I downloaded one of the 30 listed on the microsoft page and it seemed to work ok. Though the quick links, lists, etc. are different than the default version, the graphical presentation appears to be the same. Is there some sort of templates or applications that will create pages that have a distinct look and feel to them (like the ones listed at

Thanks for that link, looks pretty good, wish I'd know about it earlier may of saved me some work. - Purple star for you.

Thanx ouzojd :)

And Kurto55 the templates on the site i mentioned usualy have two editions. When i unziped them there is a "normal" version and a "styled" version.

Thanks ChaserNL - the styled version worked perfect!

Out of curiosity, does anyone know any other sites for SPS 2003 that have downloadable themes available?
