Question regarding SMDR port setup 1

I'm setting up a VODAVI Infinite DVX Plus XTS system and trying to activate the SMDR port for call logging. Book is very sketchy but indicates a standard rs232c at 19.2K...I have tried various parity/stop bits/data bits/speed combinations and it seems I can only get garbled charaters from the port.

Is there a proprietary cable/wireing involved? or am I just not setting the comm parameters correctly? Currently I am running a straight through cable, I had tried a roll-over and a cross-over with no output. The straight through seems to provide an output, but I cannot read it.

Vodavi had not used propriety wiring for SMDR that I knew of. Have you looked at flash 21 for smdr on/off, type reports, baude rateand port assignment.

I have always used 8N1 for output and you should at least see some activity. Put a breakout box on the cable and see if you are seeing any activity at all after calls. JerryReeve

I set up SMDR via flash 21 as per my manual and I am getting a signal out of the port. I have not been able to interpret the data using Hypertem or a VT-100. I get a mix of graphic and mathemetical symbols rather than the printable text I was expecting. This has led me to think perhaps my cable was incorrect, or I have mosconfigured the comm parameters.

Currently I am using 19.2K 8,N,1 with xon/xoff which matches the seetings for the maintenance port. I can access the maitenance port using hyperterm and the vt-100 with no problems. accessing the SMDR data has not been successful. Is there a diagnostic I can run which will test the port for proper operation?

did you check out flash 15 for baud rate settings on the different ports? JerryReeve

yes, flash 15 settings are for 19.2K. It really has me scratching my head. I can communicate remotely via PC terminal port and program the system, but cannot capture SMDR data for my records.

The odd characters I am getting suggest a parity issue, However I have tried all permutations of parity, speed, stop bits, and data bits. 8,N,1 at 19.2K is the only setting which has resulted in output, but that output is not readable.

I have also switched from port 3 to port 4 with the same result.

Is it safe to assume the cableing for the remote PC terminal port is the same as that needed for the SMDR port?

I'm beginning to wonder if I have a bad board or port controller? Is there a diagnostic I can perform?

it may be set up as a printer port, try a gender bender although as you said you are seeing the data coming across the cable on a breakout box. I would suggest you pull one side of the breakout box and then the other and see if you are seeing a conflict. also did you try to put the smdr out on the maintenance port (you would have to change it back via a phone afterword i think) I'll pull out my book tonight and look at it again though. I am unaware of a diag for that though. JerryReeve

we have ours on xtsc set port 2 at 2400 baud 8 none and 1
works fine on xtsc
think 3 is modem port
