Question regarding ip number

This is my first post here, hope someone may help me.

If I do an ip trace of my ip it comes up as being the wholesellor here in Australia (iprimus) and shows the ip range, but my isp is not iprimus, its a local isp.

An admin on a forum was able to come up with more detailed information on my ip, like the city I dial into for dial-up access.

I wonder if anyone here can tell me what he would be using that tells him what city I am in. Is there a way to take an ip and find the specific company that owns it instead of showing the wholeseller and its ip range ?

You can use the WHOIS tool on a specific IP address to find out about who owns it.

Thanks for your reply but I can alredy do a trace of my ip identical to that. The result of the ip trace tells of the ip range that is owned by the isp wholesellor, which in my case is iprimus in sydney australia. I wanted to know how a forum admin was able to trace my ip further to a specific town (the town I dial into to connect on this dial-up isp)
It is not iprimus that is my isp, it is a smaller company that has bought ip addresses from the wholeseller.

I dont live in sydney, I live 2 hrs from sydney in a town not mentioned anywhere in the above ip trace so how was someone able to come to a more specific trace ?

1. If you do a tracert on your ip, does it resolve your local ISP?

2. If you were to call iprimus, would they tell you who purchased that block of ip's?
