Pardon this question if it sounds simple, web & graphics is not my thing...

How can I edit a GIF image that contains text? I'd like to change a button on my website, but the button is an image just containing a text graphic. Is it even possible? I have Photoshop 6, Dreamweaver 4.

Matt J.

what do you mean edit, the text on the image is set and cannot be changed. you can edit the height and width and even the color somewhat in the image but the text cannot be manipulated

sometime you just gotta say "WHAT THE @#*% !!"

That's what I figured, as I said, web & graphics is not our thing here.

pretty much any graphics editor is going to be able to trace lines to cut the text out and then you can manipulate the gif back to a appearance suiting it. however a hard task in my eyes, but not for some. most of my the time I would rather recreate the complete image from scratch and do what it is I want at that point to it.

You can edit it in Photoshop... simply open the image in photoshop change Image>Mode>RGB Color color over your text with whatever bg there is to you button then type new text and resave as a gif

Conehead, what did this part mean???

"color over your text with whatever bg there is to you button"

Matt J.

Say you have a blue button with white text... after converting your gif to RGB simply select your button color (blue) color over the text with the paint brush.... you should have your button with no text... simply type new text in... as good as new.... this is easy if your background is one color.... if not... you can still do it just takes more patients...

Thanks Conehead. Anyone recommend any good Photoshop books?

Matt J.

Thanks Conehead. I'm having a problem with the text tool, I can type, but the color is stuck at white. When I use the color pallete tool, no matter what color I scroll to for the foreground, it stays white. I'm ordering some books, but if you have any more info, it would be appreciated.

Matt J.

Click on the text tool.... at the top you should see a color box... changing the color in the toolbar will do you no good... as you have found out... change the color in the color box at the top of your screen... next to the right align box and the "text on a path" box...
