Question on Sizing Tempdb

We have a question on sizing Tempdb.

We have 4 databases on an ASE 12.0 server, each at 5GB.

Tempdb is currently filling up intermittently and causing
us problems, I think it was sized too small to begin with
at 850mb.

In the Sybooks 12.0 documentation with regard to sizing tempdb, it goes on to say:

"For most applications, make tempdb 20 to 25% of the size of your user databases to provide enough space for these uses."

Now, how should we interpret this, note it says
20 to 25% of the size of your user databases (in plural).
Our 4 databases total 20GB

Would you interpret that as meaning our tempdb should be
5GB ? (25% of 20GB(all 4 databases))

Or should we make it 25% of the size of our largest database? eg: make tempdb 1.25GB (25% of 5GB)?

((Assume all databases are all in active use))!!

Thanks!

We have 6 dbs on one server totalling 12Gbytes
Our tempdb is 3.2 gBytes - so I guess its 25% of all dbs Dickie Bird (:)-)))

I have had 3 databases, and the largest being 120GB, with the others at around 50-60GB. Our tempdb was only 850MB. The sizing all depends on how the application actually utilizes the database (work tables, temp tables, etc.) I would monitor tempdb, and see how large it is going, and then add an additional 25%.

No two environments are the same, and a general rule of 25% is vague in my opinion, and its take some monitoring of environment to determine the sizing.

Just my $.02
