Question on MSDE

Can anyone advise if MSDE work only on Microsoft 2K server?
Will MSDE work on Novell Network Server or NT Server?
Recently, I have an application that is created to be used in MSDE 2000. But when it was installed on the Novell Network Server, it failed? Can anyone advise why? I am not a programmer and I was told by the programmer that MSDE ONLY works on Microsoft 2k Server. Is it true?
