Question I never could figure out

Sometimes when I use a mask, my movie shows only the area that the mask covers (within the object), but other times, it shows everything but what the mask covers (outside the object).

Is there something I'm doing that triggers this?
 
Hmmmm ... masks are supposed to reveal whatever is behind the shape you used in the mask layer. I've never come across and "inverse" mask before.
 
It's just that you have to lock all the layers involved in the mask effect.

If not, make sure your layers have the good properties (mask, masked).
