ok i know this is not the place but i need some ideas...ok say i want to make flash presentations for companies using them for conferences or whatever...my first question is, should i use flash or learn to use powerpoint?..advantages, dis-advantages?..second if i use flash for these presentations i understand how to set the presentations up, but how would i go about setting up the little hand held clicker thing?..whatever that is called..has anyone done this before?..can you walk me through the steps?..

thanks in advance..

Im not sure about how the clicker works, but I would go with Flash. Powerpoint creates a very static looking page.. With Flash you can jazz up the presentation a whole lot more and have transitional things rather than a slideshow. So I say go with Flash for the eye-candy.

If the clicker thing doesnt work with flash (I have no idea on whether or not it will) you can always set it up so that they can use the arrow keys (or any key) to advance/reverse.

There's my two pennies. -Nukoi

Yes you could export your flash scenes as jpgs, but that would still be static.. I was trying to get at the fact that you can have things moving and it would just be more visually appealing (depending on the project).. With Flash you can do alot more than the powerpoint fly-in's etc.

You can actually embed a Flash movie directly into a Powerpoint presentation.

In Powerpoint go:
view>toolbars>control toolbox

select "other controls" (which is a crossed

hammer/screwdriver affair)

Select "Shockwave Flash"

Position the crosshairs where you want your movie to appear.

You'll also have to go into the "Properties" of this object menu to check "embed movie" so that it ships as part of the Powerpoint file.

It works great and really impresses clients who are used to standard Powerpoint stuff.

I've never used Powerpoint, nor have I really even seen a presentation... But isn't that clicker Carl is referring to, only a "red pointer kind of projector thing" to call attention on a particular area of the screen, or is it in fact, also some kind of remote control, that can be used to advance to another page or whatever you call it, in the presensation?

i think it's used sorda like the mouse..clicking on the button should advance the movie..i think..should be like my wacom art tablet..when you plug it in the usb it takes over and becomes the mouse..so i imagine that clicker thing would be the same way..the only thing is how would flash know that it is clicking and advancing the movie to the next frame or scene or whatever..you wouldn't have a button to click on..only the click of the clicker thing..ah sheesh this is rediculous, what is the name of that darn thing?..

are you goning to be presenting these your selves or have them as a walkthrough...cuz i do this right now and for those that i dont present myself i do flash...its more interactive but for those that i present myself (or make for someone to do) then powerpoint because the pointer and cliker dont work with flash (at least to the best of my knowlegdge)

i'm just researching for future reference..will be one option i offer, if i can figure out how to do it..well i know i can figure it out..will keep looking..

If it takes over as the mouse like you say and the clicker becomes the mouse, you can use:
if(Key.isDown(1)){
play()
}

(key 1 = left mouse button) -Nukoi

Carl, yes the clicker acts just like the mouse. Just cleared this with the techie guy here. What you do is connect the mouse point on your PC/Laptop to the projector and this then turns the Clicker to a mouse. Takes a bit of a steady hand to point it in the right place though.

(Hmmm, I guess you could create a kinda First Person Shoot'em'up game with this......)

I'd go with Flash as it gives a more professional look to the finished presentation but does take longer to produce than Power Point. Power Point has, as you know may know, preset animations but they are bad.

We do LOADS of presentation work for large screen, large audience seminars and marketing shows. We have a few hard fast rules learned through bitter experience.

1..ALWAYS assume that the client WILL make last minute changes. If your text is buried in an actionscript can you access, amend and recompile in a few minutes under pressure?

2..If the client's salesforce is going to use this on their laptops and travel around do NOT use Flash! If they or their client do not have the plug in or player it becomes your fault!!! I know you can automate the loading of a Flash Player but someone WON'T... Trust me on this one!

3..If you are doing a one-off where you are in control use Flash or Director until your heart is content.WOW them! Just bear point 1 in mind!

4..Embedding flash in PowerPoint is really cool, but can be volatile -tread carefully!

5..Flash keyboard commands are drowned out when embedded in Director and will not work!

5..PowerPoint is only as static as the designer. Try experimenting with png formats for soft edges. It may not be the fastest flashiest horse in the race but it will ALWAYS complete the course!

That about covers it....and hey, the 'clicker' is merely a remote mouse click!

Hope that helps! Anything else - let me know!

Just a note..

They dont need the Flash plugin if you export as an .exe/.hqx I've done 25ish multimedia presentations on CDs and as long as you make a projector all is well in the world. -Nukoi
