Hi, I was wondering how other freelancers working alone handle working on several sites simoultaneously. You don't want to not accept the new client b/c you can't do it this week. But on the other hand, it sounds unprofessional to say, I'm in middle of several sites and I can't begin working on yours until next week. So what do you do?

working on multiple sites isn't really much of a issue. the time frame for bids jsut get adjusted for curtrent work load on hand. if needed turning down business is simply part of the game. you're going to have to do it sooner or later. letting them know that the time frame will be slightly more then normal isn't unproffesional at all, but just a part of your bid. your offer for the site is what it is. if the time frame is to great then they may not except it and that again is jsut part of the business. A well written site in your time abilities is better business then a half fast thrown together site in short time. that will be reflected in your future business. so do what you can and only what you can. _________________________________________________________

flasher,

Do like I do. Charge enough so that you can hire someone to do some or most of the work. Make a profit by overseeing the project rather than doing all the work alone.

Yes. XUTOPIA has a point. It's good to have friends who are willing to help. I had this same problem recently. I was bidding on 7 (!) projects, because there were a number of other people bidding, too, and I wanted to be sure to get one! So, I had some friends who are not freelancers, but would be willing to help out a couple of hours a day, if I got too much. Once I won one of the bids, I simply cancelled four of them. I chose those four to cancel either because I bid low on some of them or becuase I hadn't gotten a reply to my initial bid. If I had been in a position where I won multiple bids, they had agreed to do all the work for the amount of the bid or a percengate of it for a percentage of the bid.

Just an idea, but I know that with all the freelancer designers in this forum, there will always be someone lacking work at some point. If there were enough of us interested, maybe we could ask Dave to setup a place where we'd help each other out by doing work for each other when we get too much. He in exchange would get a commission for each time. He needs money for this site, and by adding this type of feature (not just for the web design category), might be able to generate a good deal more. It would also help us out if we over bid....Just an idea...
