Hello,

I have a 8.1.7 oracle version on NT. I created two instances :
- the first with iso latin charset
- the second with UTF8 charset

My problem is : how to define a NLS_LANG variable for each instance ???

If I set NLS_LANG as a environment variable for UTF8, I have problem whem I attemp to display data from ISO-LATIN database.
And the same problem when I set NLS_LANG for ISO-LATIN and I display data from UTF8 database...

So, how to set NLS_LANG for each instance ? How to solve this matter ?

Best regards,
Anthony.

Hello,

Above all, thank for your help !

I tried to unset NLS_LANG environment variable. The problem is that I used an application that required this setting... So, when I restarted the server, the service which needs the NLS_LANG sets to .UTF8 doesn't start and the error "Error Receiving Response" occured...

Have you another idea ? How can I solve this problem ?

Best regards,
Anthony.

Hi,

Check the following :

Don't set NLS_LANG on the client side.
You can sepcify some NLS parameters at the server level in the init<SID>.ora file (NLS_LANGUAGE, NLS_DATE_FORMAT)

Hello,

According your advice, I try to unset NLS_LANG from the environment variables.
I set NLS_LANGUAGE and NLS_TERRITORY in the init<SID>.ora file.
I restart the server and the product which need NLS_LANG doesn't start properly... :(

I make another try :
I set NLS_LANG to .UTF8 (instead FRENCH_FRANCE.UTF8) as environment variable.
I set NLS_LANGUAGE and NLS_TERRITORY in the .ora file
After restart, the product using UTF8 database works good.
However, the other product which using the ISO-LATIn database prints always bad characters...

So, is it possible to define the charset to be used by client in the .ora file ? (as LANGUAGE and TERRITORY)

Thanks for your help !

Best regards,
Anthony.
