Hello-

I acquired a copy of Workstation 6
esx, essentially -what are the differences between this and lets say -virtual center.. Can I create an environment to run multiple VM's? but not as robust as Center? How does Vmotion and VMPlayer work in conjunction with Workstation?

Any info would be useful, and I'll starting hitting the VM site...

thx

Geranimo

First, there are many different products that VMware offers so it is easy be confused. Workstation 6 is an application that runs on either Linux or Windows XP that allows you to created virtual machines of almost any operating system. ESX or now commonly known as VI3 is an enterprise class hypervisor that is its own OS (it runs a version of Linux as the "Service Console" that allows you to see inside the VMKernel). Virtual Center is a windows application that manages ESX servers. It does not offer any management for Workstation 6. VMPlayer allows you to create a VM from Workstation 6 or VMware Server and play it back on any PC without having to have WS6 or VMware Server installed and it plays it back read-only. There is a great wealth of information on
I hope I have offered some help.

Oh, I forgot...

VMotion allows a runnng VM to move live from one host to another (without sessions interruption). This functionality is only available in ESX and the hosts must be attached to common storage (SAN, iSCSI, NAS). VMotion is not a function of Workstation 6

Hello,

I have been doing some reading up on vmware workstation 6, but do not get a definitive answer to the following question.
Can I actually run server virtual servers running windows 2003 server on my XP Pro machine? Or as the name 'workstation' implies, I can only run several clients (xp pro etc) on a client (xp) machine?

Sorry if this is a silly question, I am new to vmware. Also, are you limited to how many virtual machines you can run by a vmware licence, or is it only your hardware that can restrict the number of virtual servers that you can run?

Thank you.

Regards,
D.

In WS6 if you go to create a VM, there is a drop down that will list all the OS's that are supported as VM's. There is no limit to how many VM's you can run. The more VM's you run, the more strain on the machine.
