Hello everyone,

I have a strange situation with Windows XP Pro. Now before I updated a computer from Windows 2000 Pro, I created a limited access account for a user, Poweruser. In the past, there was no problem. But now when I try to do this, the account is created and the user can log in. However, the screen turns blue as if it's about to load the desktop, but the hourglass just sits there and goes off and on from pointer and hourglass. The computer doesn't seem to have crashed as I'm able to log out of the account. There doesn't seem to be any problems if I create administrator accounts only with Power Users. I updated the system with Windows XP Pro SP2, thinking that would remedy the problem but it still does the same thing eventhough I deleted the account and created it again. I even created a administrator account and then changed the user type to Power user. But when I did that the same problem occured. Does anyone know why this is happening? Can it be corrected without doing a full installation of Win XP pro? I'm trying to avoid losing the current programs.

Thanks
KJ

Windows XP Inherits Autologon Setting After Upgrade from Win2000

"After you upgrade a Microsoft Windows 2000-based computer, Windows XP Professional may start directly to the desktop without stopping at the Welcome screen or requiring you to type a username and password. If you then create a new user account, you may not receive any option that allows you to log on by using the new account.

This behavior can occur if Windows 2000 was configured for automatic logon (Autologon). Windows XP inherits this configuration setting.

To resolve this behavior, turn off the automatic logon feature and require a username and password at logon:

1. Click Start on the Windows taskbar, and then click Run.
2. In the Open box, type control userpasswords2, and then click OK.
3. In the dialog box that appears, click to select the "Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer"
check box, and then click OK.

To work around this behavior, log off from the Autologon account, and then log on by using the new account".

Have you tried this, Start/ Run/ lusrmgr.msc/ Groups/ Power users, see if the user is listed in there or Add it?

Are there any clues in the Event Viewer?

I already have it set so that the user must enter a user name and password to use this computer. The problem is that it's not loading the profile for the Power Users account. When the user logs in, a blank blue screen appears with the hourglass going on and off while the harddrive is spinning. I can log off, but that's it. I have no problems logging on to the administrator account. I even created a few administrator accounts and the profiles and everything works fine. It's just the Power Users account.

Thanks,
KJ

Can the Power User login via Safe Mode? You may have to press Ctrl+Alt+Del at the Safe Mode login screen to access the login box so you can type the name of the Power User and enter their password.

You haven't said whether you have any errors in the Event Viewer, the Security Log might be a helpful read?

Some other things you might be able to consider.

How To Reset Security Settings Back to the Defaults

Look at the tool NTrights.
NTRIGHTS.exe (Resource Kit, 2000/2003)

How to Reset User Rights in the Default Domain Controllers Group Policy Object

It may be that some conflict or corruption has been carried across from 2000 to PRO and in the end the only sure way to fix it may be the "dreaded" clean install.
