I have Norton 2004 antivirus. My isp uses a proxy for a faster connection so therefore I use the "interactive" mode when updating virus definitions; also I turn off the "accelerator" when updating or checking for new dat files(I was having problems updating with the proxy enabled).
There was a new virus definition on Tuesday, I downloaded it(even though there was a question mark in the same area of the updater), then noticed that after I downloaded the dat file, it said "installing file" when I noticed it also said status: "installed". Yesterday, when I opened up interactive mode the was another "new" virus definition file available(question mark again in window) so I downloaded it and again noticed after download it said "installed" again. Today same thing happened, am I downloading and "installing same new virus definition 3 days in a row?
I don't want to waste harddrive space even though I have large harddrive. Can anyone explain what is happening with this update, and what I should do about it(file today was approx. 477kb.)

I've been experiencing similar problems with NAV on three different (not networked) PC's. The difference is that I was receiving messages that the virus definitions were out of date, however, when I clicked live update, it said that definitions were current. The dates were up to 3 months old. I uninstalled and reinstalled, then was able to get updates.

The bad news is, on the third PC, I saw that NIS was disabled. When I opened NAV, the hard drive started whirling. I shut it down. Any suggestions ?

How do I email symantec techs about this issue? Your issue sounds more like what happened with me on my other computer w mcafee9.0; I had to remove program, them use regedit to manually remove all traces of mcafee before reinstalling program. I posted this problem before, a user told me that norton actually updates virus definitions each day; therefore that is why the "?" appears when I run live update manually (interactive mode). Each time the files are downloaded but after download when progress bar starts moving to right it says status:"installed". This usually happens on Tuesday or the next 2 days. So what is happening is that I am probably downloading part or all of the new dat but the software recognises that the definitions are already up to date. If I open the norton antivirus program while not online, every thing is ok and has green check marks; also says virus definitions 2-17-05 .
I am running live update in interactive mode thus I can choose which items I want to update by unchecking or checking items. How do I know which virus definition file I am downloading?; there is a plus sign I click that shows me the size of file- but there should be a way of determining what dat file this actually is. Also, I manually run live update frequently; if I didn"t use computer for a week, live update window would probably appear.
If anyone else knows understands why this is happening with me, please post. Also doesn;t norton have email address or online chat service for tech support; if so, please put link to these in your post. Thank you.

I bet you than the support of NAV on-line or knowledge base will finish by...use our download adress...

the update is on daily basis , very more accurate than once a week...

( it is only my opinion - have a nice day )

..._ - _ - every trouble shooting begin with power ON !! we always forgot one day. :) HAVE A NICE DAY.

Hey,how come I haven't been able to download a new virus definition file in about a week(if I open Norton, it says last update was 3-9-05. But I believe I was able to update at least once or twice since the 9th (though I'm not sure that they were dats- I actually had to remove norton from add/rem and re-install all the updates which was a royal pain in the ass) Since the re-installation, I notice that the last 4 days when I click manually on live update a message is displayed (hard to see)that I already have all current updates. I hope tomorrow that I am able to update by manually running live update(do not want to go thru uninstall process again!!)
I went to Symantac's site on support and their software determined(by me first downloading direct x) that no problems were present with my norton antivirus. We will see tomorrow; I have not been able to download any new updates in 4 or 5 days. I read somewhere that I might have to find the files where all the new dats are stored, delete that folder, and then run live update.
Also I believe that the last time I updated a virus def. file, the date remained 3-9-05 within norton antivirus (date did not change?)
Anyone feel free to post or add your feedback to this. Thank you.

Anyone been able to update today latest virus definition file yet?
By the way the new norton online chat is terrible, leave you waiting to chat for long time!!

Just ran an update. It was successful and now shows my Virus Definitions current as of the 16th.

Prior to this is showed the 9th. and I had updated after that date, I'm sure of it.

Strange things happening with my Norton lately....all of a sudden, I have to disable my firewall, (Norton) to download updates. Never needed to do this before.

Have had to reinstall Norton AV twice due to pop up messages that tell me "AntiVirus protection is turned off".

I am having a similar problem since installing SP2. When I run Norton Live Update I get an error message saying "LU1814: LiveUpdate could not retrieve the update list." And goes on to tell me to connect to the internet first, which I already am. I am runnig XP and Norton 2002 which I didnt have any problem with before SP2. I have Zone Alarm for a firewall which the Security Center sees. Norton wants me to upgrade to Norton 2005, they say they cannot help with 2002. Any ideas?

Just opened up live update and downloaded new virus definitions (approx. 9:30am EST) Checked date after update was installed: 3-17-05. Seems date only changes once a week when you update virus def. on Wednesday.
What does moderator or administrator have to say about this? (please read my previous posts)

Virus defs only get posted to LiveUpdate once a week, or as needed in the case of high-risk viruses. If you want new defs every day, go to and download the Intelligent Updater, which is updated daily.
