Question about the Merlin Attendant Console

I recently purchased an attendant console from ebay, (AT&T Merlin II 72 Display console). I plugged it in and all buttons work except the three columns on the left, these are for direct station dialing, correct? Are they preprogrammed or? I tried to program them and kept getting an error message on the display. We have the 10/30 merlin system. Are they not compatable or did i get a broken phone?

Just another quicky....What is the difference between a merlin, merlin II, and merlin legend?

the merlin 3070 requires a 110 button console. It has a membrane type phone without a display. That's all there was back then.
