Question about Table of Contents and Page Numbering 1

I'm currently transcribing an old out-of-print book (church history archive) into Word 2007, and I'm trying to maintain the original formatting as much as possible. The preface and introduction to this book are numbered using lower-case roman numerals (pages vi. and xi. respectively), and then Chapter I. restarts the page numbering at 1. I was able to do this with page numbering in the footer; however, when I try to create a Table of Contents based on this numbering, what I get is this:

PREFACE. 6
INTRODUCTION. 11
CHAPTER I. 1
CHAPTER II. 22

etc.

For the life of me, I cannot figure out how to make the 6 appear as vi. and the 11 appear as xi. while maintaining the 1 and 22 etc. Shouldn't the ToC follow the page numbering convention rather than using all arabic numerals?

Thanks in advance for any help.

OK that was awesome, not only did it fix my TOC but wow it also gave me a lot of fixes for my page numbering. Thanks a ton, I wish I could give you more than one star (-:
