I have a question on rather anyone can point me in a direction of what is better access or sql express? Access is doing great at this point but I was going to go threw all the code to streamline it to make it work more effectively. However, I was thinking rather than redoing the code for access to run more smoothly why not just learn sql and start out with sql express. If I do this will sql express be accessible from the web? Keep in mind our hosting is in-house. If it is it more secure? Last but not least is Microsoft rumor of doing away with access true? Thanks guys

SQL Express in almost every way possible is better than Access. It is actually a slightly crippled version of SQL Server and supports the exact same syntax as SQL Server including Stored Procedures. Its performance is way better than Access as well.

However before committing to it you should establish how many users will be using it and what the likely load will be. If Access is coping with the demands of your web application OK then SQL Express will probably be OK too but be prepared to upgrade to SQL Server proper if it starts showing signs of stress (queries staring to take a long time, web pages slow to respond etc.)

Another thing to consider is whether the database needs to interact with other processes in your business. If so can the programs that do this use the SQL Express database?

I'd be very surprised if MS has any plans to do away with Access itself as it's a vital part of the Office package but it might make the Jet Database slightly more difficult to access in order to encourage the use of SQL Express.

Thanks Bob for the information. Right now access is doing great, but I think I will download SQL express and start the learing curve. Maybe by the time we need to upgrade I will be versed on SQL. Thanks again
