Question about spreads in InDesign

I'm helping make a catalogue for my company and I've never worked with qraphics software before. I have a pretty simple question, but I can't seem to find the answer anywhere.
When I'm looking at each spread on the screen it numbers each page seccessively (pg 1,2,3,4,etc...), but obviously when it goes to print the actual paper spreads wouldn't look like that if it was done correctly. It would have page 2 on a spread with pg 71 for example. Also if you are supposed to layout it out that way (pg 2 with pg 71) on the computer,it doesn't tell what side of the spread you are looking at when it says pg 2,3; pg 4,5; etc. It seems to me that it is making it really easy by just showing you each page in a "spread" as it would appear if you were actually flipping through the catalogue all put together. That would mean it shifts the page information around when it sends the data to the printer so that the correct pages are paired up on each side of each spread. That seems like a lot of work for the program to do. Does it actually work that way or am I completely off? Thanks for any advice! It's much needed!

Setting the book to print properly is called Imposing. The printer usually does this with imposing software. You don't have to worry about this at all. The printer will handle it. All you have to do is work in the normal ID way.

I have ID 3, Pagemaker edition. That came with a basic imposer, Inbooklet SE. I use it for printing bazic proofs for clients and/or sending a proof to the printer. The printers never ask for imposed versions of work.

I don't know if Adobe is still putting it in with any versions of ID, but you can check to see if you have it by going to File menu and looking for Inbooklet at the very bottom. If it's there, you have it and can read up on it by going to ID Help and searching for "impose".

ALAP is the company that I'm most familiar with for imposition software, but there are others. You could look at alap.com if you want further info.
