Ok so I was running windows server 2003 and had tons of problems when I used the SMTP service to send out emails from my asp.net application. I used the basic POP3 service for my actual emails. Somehow spammers were able to use that SMTP service to send out junk mail to people. I then just bought SmarterMail Server and it fixed the problem. Now I just upgraded to windows 2008 Server and was wondering if I will have any problems like before if I use the default mail server services from windows or will I need to purchase a new mail server application? Thank you for your help.

If you configure an SMTP server then you need to put some form of authentication or relay restrictions on it. If you allow it to relay messages from any address you will end up being used to spam. Typically you would only allow a handful of hosts to relay messages through it, and you would specify the addresses of those hosts (which presumably you would own).
