Question about permissions and WU-FTP/RH7.2

I've been running RH with winbind and wu-ftp, no problem for several months but my permissions a little screwy and I would like some help. First, anonymous connects are not allowed, each user has thier own ID and directory. All of that works fine. The problem lies in a shared directory. When a user uploads to this directory, the default permissions are -rw-r--r-- owner:10000. I need them to be -rw-r--rw- ownerofdirectory:ftpgroup. Any way to do this? Thanks!

I think there is a great deal of information "out there" that talks about why wu-ftpd is a very bad product. As of 7.3, RH ships with vsftpd (very secure ftpd), as .RPMs.

Coincidentally vsftpd is also very good at setting and enforcing read/write access and most perms.

You may wish to change ftpd's to solve the issue, RedHat would recommend you do so.

hrmm, ok, that would be kewl. But does it support winbind? It must before we can use it.

The Winbind manual says:

"The end result is that whenever any program on the UNIX machine asks the operating system to lookup a user or group name, the query will be resolved by asking the NT domain controller for the specified domain to do the lookup. Because Winbind hooks into the operating system at a low level (via the NSS name resolution modules in the C library) this redirection to the NT domain controller is completely transparent."

I haven't tested anything, but I would expect vsftpd to utilize the same PAM and Auth hooks as wu-ftpd.

Good Luck

Well, I don't have any problem with trying it at a later date, but as typically in IT, I am swamped. Any way to get the permissions to work like I want with WU-FTP?

First, and again, my DISCLAIMER: wu-ftpd is not secure. You are doing your users a disservice by continuing to use this product.

Havnig said that, I found this four year old thread that essentially asks, and hopefully satisfactorally answers, an almost identical question to your's.

Good luck.
