Hi!

I'd like to know whether I should be putting different meta descriptions in different pages of my website?

For example if one page is about living room furniture, and another page is about kitchen furniture.......should their respective meta descriptions be different?

And finally, should I submit them separately to the search engines once a month?

Thanks!

Hi Tina,

Nearly all of the major engines dont use the meta keywords tags but they are worth using if only for the smaller engines.

As for the actual content of your meta tags, then yes, for best rankings and results, then use meta tags that are appropriate to their respective page.

Hope this helps Wullie

Here is a link to a very helpful outline of the major search engines and what they use
If you become a memeber of this site you get a regular newsletter that gives you up to date info on who is doing what. Things like which search spider site is updating their index and who hasn't in a while. You will be very surprised at the things that go on behind the scenes. Excite last year went four months between index up dates. Altavista droped out of their index 10 million sites. They put them back the following month. While the Searchengingwatch.com site has some public links, like the one I provided, it is a site for professional designers. Some of the members content can become a little thick, so to speak.

As for meta tags, as you will see from the link I provided, almost all the major search engines use meta tags. However almost all of them have reduced the weight they give them when ranking.

When it comes to search sites, Relevant Content Is King!!!!

I should also have added that anyone who has an interest in search engine optimization should check out the Tek-Tips Search Engine Optimization disscusion forum. Wullie is and has been doing a fantastic job of help people understand search engines.

Ok when you say relevant content.....if I have pages that mainly consist of pictures, should I give them each an alt tag?

If I left the pictures *without* an alt tag, would the spiders most likely just go right past those pages?

Thomas that is an excellent site, thanks!!

I agree with cian that you should use alt tags for the reason described, and you should use them becasue some search engines read and use the alt tags in ranking.

I would urge some caution though, because it is a little frustrating to mouseover an image and have a hundred key words displayed.
