Hello to all-

This is a rather large company that is using a licensed copy of ESX - we use Virtual Center (infrstructure 3)..

My question: Are licenses applied per CPU based on the VM? So if for instance I have a virtual machine using 4 virtual cpu's does that mean one license was used for this creation OR is each virtual CPU in need of an individual license.

I am willing to call VMware directly but thought to ask the experts here first

thanks for any information provided

It is licensed by the number of physical CPU's in the server.
When VMware starts it tests for the number of cpu's against the license. I am not sure how they count dual core.

we just went through this in house and was told that the licenses count against the number of physical processors so therefore a dual core or quad core processor is only one license

The 2 answers above are absolutly correct. 1 Physical Multi-Cored CPU is licensed as 1.

Thanks to all for this information!

I appreciate it
