I have a record for mydomain.com. Now they want something like

print.mydomain.com to be pointed to 11.222.333.444

does anyone know what i should do?
thanks

If 11.222.333.444 is the same host "mydomain.com", you just need a PTR record. If print.mydomain.com is a different host, you need another A record.

Some people say pointer, and they mean alias or CNAME. PTR is always the reverse DNS record (IP TO NAME), so I would avoid using the ambiguous word "pointer" in the DNS context.

Thanks for the replies. I already have a dns record for mydomain.com that points to my ip address. The second site 'print.mydomain.com' is supposed to go elsewhere. I ended up creating an A record. On the forward lookup zone, I see
------------
mydomain.com
+print.mydomain.com

When i try to go to the new url, I get an HTTP:400. What do you think I did wrong?
thanks

I did indeed mean to say cname, sorry about that.

400 is bad request, so your request got all the way to your web server, but it doesn't like (most likely) the host part of the URL, for instance if it was virtual hosted.

Check with ping that it is the correct IP.

Check with to see if you get the same 400.

You are good, I am pretty sure the error is on the web server end, a misconfiguration or service not turned up.

Agreed, if you're pinging, but getting error 400 when pulling up the web page, there is a problem in the web server config.

No to traceroute. http return 400 means that you are getting all the way to some web server, and it is spitting back at you.

Firewall block would not return that.

It guess it might be a restrictive http proxy on your end, but if you aren't using a proxy or aren't restrictive...

Ok, I think their end is setup but i am still experiencing some weird problem. When I go to the site print.mydomain.com from office behind the firewall, i see the site. When i am elsewhere, it throws the following error:

This problem can be caused by a variety of issues, including:
• Internet connectivity has been lost.
• The website is temporarily unavailable.
• The Domain Name Server (DNS) is not reachable.
• The Domain Name Server (DNS) does not have a listing for the website's domain.
• If this is an HTTPS (secure) address, click Tools, click Internet Options, click Advanced, and check to be sure the SSL and TLS protocols are enabled under the security section.

What am I doing wrong? thanks
