Hi all,

I've been trolling here for a while and decided to post a question.

I put my question in here because i'm re-reading for my CCNA (set to take it Nov 22nd). My question is, Do you prefer to have your router do DHCP or a Server? Or it is personal preference?

I assume that it is personal preference but I wanted to ask.

Thanks.

it depends. if you have a small branch office or a soho environment a lot of people will use the router. a lot of times you'll also see guest wireless addresses being served from a router.

I hate all Uppercase... I don't want my groups to seem angry at me all the time! =)

Functionally, they do the same job!

Administratively, you may not want people to touch the router to debug issues. If you have Windows admin in your office, I would give this task to the Windows admin to handle. If you have office that has no Windows Admin and you do everything - network and windows then it does not matter.

A server (Wind0z3) is more granular and has more options for the scopes (using AD)...

I always use the router myself.

There's no real wrong answer to this, and to be honest I highly doubt Cisco would ask a comparison question on it in that exam (your time is better spent elsewhere).

Having said that, if I was running DHCP at a small branch site with a collapsed core, I'd probably do it on the router. If I had a very large, super-modular enterprise campus network, I'd probably do it from the server farm.
