I currently have a Gigabyte GV-R485ZL-512H video card (Radeon 4850 512MB), but a couple of the games that I'm playing these days can get a big laggy and have hitching in spots, especially when it's pretty graphically intensive. I'm thinking that I'd like to get another card and Crossfire them, as the games that I play have been reported to get a healthy boost from Crossfire and ATI 4850 cards have been relatively cheap ($100-$125) lately. The only problem is that I can't seem to find the same model card that I have now. Is that an issue with Crossfire? Would it still work if I had a different brand as long as the chipset was the same?

Nope. That's a 4550, mine's a 4850 (nice one too, with the Zalman HSF from the factory).

Due to that Zalman cooler, it may be thicker than standard cards...

but the good news is, that 99% of the manufacturers out there use the Reference Design from ATI (or nVidia) when they create there cards, which means that the only difference is in the Video BIOS...

so crossfire away, e.g. below:

POWERCOLOR AX4850 1GBD3-PH Radeon HD 4850 1GB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card - Retail

How to ask a question, when posting them to a professional forum.
Only ask questions with yes/no answers if you want "yes" or "no"

This is the one that I have:

Is essentially the same size as a dual-slot card, but Crossfire capable boards pretty much all give spacing for dual-slot PCIe x16 cards.

I just wasn't sure if it had to be the same manufacturer or not. Thanks!

One thing you haven't mentioned is what motherboard you are planning on running this in? It would have to be an Intel based board rather than an Nvidia one for it to support cf rather than SLI.

Simon

The real world is not about exam scores, it's about ability.

AMD, actually, and it supports CrossFireX.

Ideally: Two exact same cards;
Reality: Mix & match within the series (3000, 4000 etc) try and keep clock speeds and GDDR the same or performance will default to the lower one;
Not mentioned yet: Be sure your PSU & cooling solution is sufficient for the increased loads.
