Hello-

Has anyone here used the Quest AD Mig mgr tools for an interforest migration plan?

Just wondering at a high level if the tools provided:

-ease of use
-discover
-monitoring/reporting features.

I have read thru some of the white papers from the quest site, but they are consolidated, not too much information to be honest.

Any information on your experiences would be great and much appreciated.
thanks

I have used QMM tool on a few migrations. It is a very powerful migration tool. If you are not familiar with QMM for AD or EX tools, my recommendation is to test everything in the lab first. You can download the trial software with the complete documentation from the following location:

Quest Migration Manager is a migration tool. You can’t really do a discovery or monitoring using a migration tool. Quest has other products which can be used to perform discovery and monitoring. You can see the details on the following location:

Thanks very much Santhosh,

Is there an admin guide I can download at all? pertaining to the Quest migration manager for AD and(or) Exchange 2010.

I would really like to do some in depth reading on the subject . I know that this is generally not something you can obtain by just googling for it.

Any options?

thanks again,

thanks again Santhosh,

hey one more question, I am going to do a source <---> target Active Directory and Exchange migration

From AD 2003 to 2008 and from Exchange 2003 to 2010.. so the question is these Migrator tools are installed on a member server of which domain? the source or the target? or both?

not sure and didn't see it in the install guide but am still reading thru it..

thanks for any information at all, much appreciated~!

Thanks Pat!

didn't know 8.6 was the latest for Quest Migrator tools... but downloaded ALL AD and Exchange based pdfs... excellent reading and very thorough material~

wow Santhosh!!!

awesome, hey is their a strict recommendation to deploy the tool only on a physical server? or can I get away with deploying Quest migration manager AD/Exchange on a VM.. (we have ESX here)

just wondering if there are any issues with that.

thanks

blade

Santhosh,

just went thru your online AD migrator flow chart, very useful!!
I plan to use it's graphical details!

Also since I am doing an Exchange migration from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2010, I have read thru the admin pdf guide for migration manager Exchange 8.6 and it is quite thorough... if you have any recommendations as far as
-can I do the migration for AD as well as Exchange 2010 simultaneously or would you choose to do either in specific order?

-also can I install the migration tools on a VM? any impeding factors there is you know?

thanks again! right now I am at the discover stage, compiling information on existing exchange 2003 environment etc etc... the new exchange 2010 environment is somewhat built and so is Windows 2008 AD.

more to come and thanks again

There is no specific order but you need to have AD users in the target domain before you can “switch” the mailboxes. How many users and mailboxes are you planning to migrate?

You can perform AD and EX migration at the same time.

Yes. You can install QMM components on VMs

Please let us know if you need more info.

Hi there,

thanks for replying my friend! yes, it will be for roughly 1200 users from source to target.

I like the option to migrate at the same time although the customer has given us 2 weeks for the actual migration phase of the project so I plan to parse out the users @ 100 or so each evening. I may do the AD/Exchange migration simultaneously -need to read more within the manual to really make determination.

I have been reading the admin guide and the tips and tricks pdf for Quest migration tools and looks very promising, at this stage I am doing assessment, just discovering the customer's current network, AD and Exchange 2003 structure.

Santhosh, I appreciate your helping me very much.. I wanted to know if the Quest Mig manager for Exchange "create" the target mailboxes at all? I will migrate users (AD) first from Windows 2003 environment to Windows 2008 (either at the same time or 2nd stage will be the mailboxes to Exchange 2010 on the target side... but am not sure if quest does the complete process and create the mailboxes on exchange 2010, or this is something manual I need to do.

also I am noticing there is a large amount of .pst files... how does Quest mig manager for Exchange 2k10 handle this move? I might just copy the pst volume from source to target unless you tell me there is a much simpler way.

thanks very much again for any information you can provide

cheers!

Keep in mind that network based .pst file are not supported with Exchange/Outlook 2010. Or any version, for that matter. They only place they are supported is on the end user workstations.

Plan for performance, and capacity takes care of itself. Plan for capacity, and suffer poor performance.

Quest Migration Manager has 2 components. QMM for AD and QMM for Exchange. QMM for EX will create mailboxes in the target Exchange Org and migrate the mail data during “sync” and “switch” process. Please read about mailbox or sync and switch operations in the admin guide.

Are you planning to use QMM for AD Directory Synchronization? It is not mandatory but it is a good option during the co-existence period.

Anyway, here are the high level steps:
1. Enable QMM directory Sync
2. Configure QMM for EX and create mailbox “Sync” collections, add mailboxes to this collection
3. Migrate user accounts
4. Create “Switch” collections. Move mailboxes to “switch” collection
5. Migrate workstations

Quest has another tool called EMWProf which can be used to update the outlook profile. I recommend you to use this tool. It will update the outlook profile when the user logs onto the machine after the migration.

Quest doesn’t move PST files. It will copy the mail data from source Ex server to the target Ex server.

Thanks Santhosh very much!

Combing thru sync and switch... this should be great!
