Query's with the Data Report

VB expert,

I am trying to use the data report in VB6. It seems very easy to set it up the report with the data environment, however I can't seem to do a query on a table to select certain records for the report, how is that done? I know that crystal reports is the better way to go but I have never played with and really want to get something working while I play with it. Thanks for your help
