I am working on a database for a newsagent, for a project. A feature of the database is going to be an autoroute planner, which decides what routes the paper deliverers go on.

I was thinking about using the houses post codes used by Royal Mail in a query so the houses that come between say, BS24 6NA to BS24 6NZ as they are reasonably close together.

Just wondering if anyone has any better ideas?

From my experience of paper rounds you might have some difficulty with Post Codes. Most rounds seem to be circular so the delivers return to the newsagents at the end of the round. There are also 'branches' when the delivery is down one side of the street then back up the other then continue down the main route. So you might to round something like

High Street
Acacia Avenue
High Street
London Road
High Street
Station Road
Old Street
Station Road
New Street
High Street

You woulf probably do better assigning a Round ID to each delivery address and then have a delivery number designed to allow movement when new customers join the round. You'll also need a flag to cover holidays.

I'm interested to see if you get any practical solutions.

Good Luck

well its going to take a lot of thought, its turning out to be harder than i thought with the introduction of holidays and looping round routes!!!

Thanks for the input B827
