We usually query the VTOC of a disk using "prtvtoc /dev/rdsk/cxtxdxs2" . why ?

I also have tried "prtvtoc /dev/rdsk/cxtxdxs1" and "prtvtoc /dev/rdsk/cxtxdxs3" and so on, it all works fine.

/dev/rdsk/cxtxdxs2 refers to 'the whole disk' (and that is why it shouldn't usually be used for filesystems). The other identifiers are the individual 'slices' of the disk in question, as set up with format.
