query and type returned

what is the type that is returned when a query takes place?
ie if i query for the max of a column, what is the answer as? (int, numeric, char, vchar)??

If we are talking about the MAX Length, as in ...

SELECT MAX(LEN(MyField)) FROM MyTable ...

An Int is returned

what about select max(field) from mytable?
is this dependent on what the actual field is set to?
