Que! Fire CD burner unseen by Toast

Toast cannot see blank CDs in my firewire Que! Fire CD burner from either of my macs (G4 desktop, G3 Powerbook). Everything worked fine in OS 9 for a while. Then mysteriously Toast stopped seeing blank CDs. Upgrading to OS X has not fixe the problem. Yes, both macs see already burned CDs in this device (ie, I can insert a jazz CD and play it in iTunes from the burner drive).
