We've some problems getting Backup Exec to backup our exchange server, and it looks like we need to upgrade Backup Exec to a more recent version. At the moment we only backup users own PST files, but with more users working off site and accessing mail via OWA, this is no longer practical.

In the mean time, is there a simple way of dumping the contents of the exchange system elsewhere, preferably without stopping the Exchange server? Or do I just have to dump the EDB and STM files somewhere?

Running Exchange 2000 SP4 on Windows 2000 SP4.

Hi,
you can use ntbackup.exe to do an online backup to a file
that file can be backed up to tape (using BE or whatever)

Backup Exec has also an exchange agent to perform online backups (even do so called brick level backups)

another solution is to write a script to exmerge your mbx's to pst files every now and then and then take backups of those.

my sugestion is that you investigate the origin of you problem with BE (maybe you can provide further info) and do online backups every day (these will flush your logs and preserve diskspace ;-) )

kind regards

Great advice here, ive had to the same for the odd day here and there when arcserve 2000 decides to have 'its time of the month'

ntbackup is exchange aware and you could simply dump the file to another network share/partition and simply backup the flat resulting .bkf file
