I have several users that are running Mac OS 9 and X that have been utilizing a file server running Novell. I recently copied all the files onto an external drive so I could rebuild the server to Windows 2003. I've copied the files back, but the Mac users cannot access the QuarkXPress files as they have been turned into PC files and the Mac can't read them.

Does anyone know how to resolve thi?

Thanks

Mac's don't use filename extensions like .QXD to define the type of file. They use resource and data forks saved in one file. Your network shuffling trashed the resource fork but the data fork (the gooey goodness of the Quark document) is safe.

Use a type-creator modifier to re-associate these files with Quark. You will need to do this when the files are back on a Mac-formatted (HFS) volume. Try this free application to reset the creator code:

Your Mac users should also be able to open the files with out this software by choosing File>Open from within Quark XPress.

Thanks, but what do you mean by HFS volume? Should this type of volumn be on the Windows 2003 server or on the mac side?

HFS = Hierarchal File System, the filesystem used by OS9 and optionally by OSX (most OSX installations are HFS).

Sorry - I am not familiar with Win2003 servers and their capability so I could not say where to save the Mac files on your network. Since you are not familiar with HFS, the standard Mac volume format that is critical to the operation of classic Mac OS, I would suggest that you do some heavy research on Win-Mac networking before moving any more files.

Once re-associated, the files should be ok on a windows mac-share volume.
