Hi,

running on a G5 10.3.2, with Quark 6.1 and Suitcase X1 - I'm unable to open some of our version 4 docs. There didn't appear to be any problem with straight 6 - any suggestions?

Quark 6 will not open any files saved below verion 5.0. Blame it on Quark.

The only work around is to use Quark 5 and resave the Quark 4 files as version 5.

The only other alternative is to open the files up in InDesign. But then that means your left with InDesign files.

Cheers pixelman,

actually found if I turned off Suitcase, I could open whatever I liked, could save to v.6, then re-open with Suitcase running. Will have to use this as a work around - I can't believe Quark would stop people opening up old documents from previous versions...

I must take 2 issues with Pixelman's post...

1)
Quark 6 will not open any files saved below verion 5.0. Blame it on Quark.
Quark 6 is supposed to open documents as far back as version 3.

2)

You make it sound as if that is a bad thing. [bigsmile]

Hi jimoblak

Thanks for the clarification on the first point. I must have been thinking about which versions of Quark can save to different version files at the time.

As for the InDesign thing...I was only basing it on (the incorrect assumption) that if you could not open up earlier versions of Quark files you could use InDesign as a workaroud. But it would be a draw back if one was on a tight deadline and was not up to speed with InDesign.

Hi bischerboy,

That interesting workaround. I will keep it in mind the next time I come across a similar situation.

I don't think my poke at Quark was clear. Using InDesign is not a workaround. If you also work with InDesign, you would consider Quark XPress the workaround to using a real DTP app.
