I keep getting this message when I try to export a quark 5 file to PDF. I'm using Adobe Acrobat 6. Here's the message: "To save document as PDF, a PostScript printer must be set up to print to file."...
What do they mean by a Postscript printer? Anyone else get this message. I've got a regular Canon S750, is that a PostScript?

thanks ...

Well, it doesn't mean you physical printer has to be PostScript, but you will need a PostScript print driver and PPD. You may have one already on your computer, or you may have to download one (go to - they should definately have one). If you have Acrobat 6, it probably came with one (AdobePS for example).

Before you go searching, though, and if you are creating your PDF directly from Quark, go to File > Export > Document As PDF... and click the Options button. There may be a PostScript PPD already installed, so in the Output tab, pick a suitable printer description (ie. one that can handle PostScript), then set the various options and create your file.

What's happening is that Quark creates a PostScript file, then it passes that on to Acrobat to convert it to a PDF. You can, of course, just use the Print dialog box to print to a PostScript file, and manually open it in Distiller for finer control. Once you get the Export method up and running, you'll probably prefer to use that though, as it automates a lot of the work.

hi blueark,

i have the same problem. i already installed a ps printer on my win xp pro but still get the same error. what may be the problem here? the ps printer never asked for ppd's.

First, see if you can create a ps file (in the print dialog box, click the Printer button and select 'file' rather than 'printer'). If you can't get this far, then Quark won't be able to create a PDF. Have a look under Utilities > PPD Manager... (I think... I don't have Quark in front of me right now), and see if your printer / driver is listed. If not, are there any Postscript printers there, even generic ones?

As before, if you have Quark 5, I would suggest going through File > Export > Document As PDF... and clicking the Options button, and having a look at the Output tab. Let me know how you get on, or what way you are creating your PDFs.

yes, i have all those. i want to export it from the 'export to pdf...' feature. although i can produce a pdf using print/distiller

So you have Quark 5, you can create PS files using print, and you can use distiller to create PDFs from these files, is that correct?

If so, maybe check a few of your settings (close any open documents first):

1: Go to Edit > Preferences > Preferences... and look for PDF. In the Acrobat Distiller section, press the 'Select' button and find the Distiller application program. This will make sure that Quark knows where to find it, as it can't create PDFs without it (unless you have Quark 6).

2. In the 'Workflow' section, select 'Distill Immediately'.

3. In the 'Default Settings' section, click the 'Options' button. Go to the 'Output' tab. Under the 'Printer Description' drop down list, pick a suitable postscript printer (whatever one you use in the print dialog box for creating postscript files will do).

Hopefully that should work. If not, please give more details, such as the exact error message you're getting, the name of the printer description you're using, and maybe a list of other printer descriptions available. You should also try out a few other printer descriptions if you don't have any luck.

hi,

no luck still. i have adobe distiller, Generic PostScript Printer, and my printer HP deskjet 710c.

That's quite unusual. Just so I'm clear, could you follow these steps and specify at what stage you get an error.

1: File > Export > Document As PDF (a dialog box should appear asking you where you want to save the PDF).

2: In that dialog box, click the 'Options...' button (another dialog should appear with PDF export options)

3: Click the 'Output' tab and select 'Generic PostScript Printer' from the drop down list. Click OK (which should bring you back to the first dialog box).

4: Find a location for your file, name it, and click 'Save'.

Another thought that might work is this: is your HP Deskjet set as your default printer? You may need to change this, selecting either of the other two in your printer control panel, even temporarily. You might be able to do this in Page Setup too - possibly in the Printer... dialog (I use Quark on a Mac, so I'm not too familiar with where you would find this on the XP version). Try that and see how you get on!
