We have tapes that were used in a DLT8000 drive and they have been put into a changer with DLT7000 drives. I've been having numerous media errors. I'm wondering if doing this has damaged my drives. Has anyone experienced this?

Are you using the black DLTIV cartridges ?? These should be compatible with both DLT7000 en 8000 drives.
Try putting the tape engine in debug mode, see what comes out.

When using DLT7000 and DLT8000 drives I have had problems in the past with a tape that has been used with a DLT8000 drive then trying to be place in a DLT7000 drive. It seems that even though a DLT8000 drive can read the DLT7000 drive, the reverse isn't so. I have actually used seperate media pools for either drive to avoid these problems.
