I am converting a Word document with many screen-captures to a PDF file. Once I convert the file, the quality of the images becomes very poor. Since the file is actually a user manual I need the images to be clear enough for people to read text in the images clearly.
Any ideas? Thanks.

In your distiller, choose (or create) the job type you would like to use and set the image resolution top maximum. Your job options are likely to be set at a compressed setting.

Sample print options box (from Distiller 5.0):

If you don't use this setting all the time, you may want to create a new job with the specific option you like for this type of output. That way you can select the job type from the print dialog/options box inside MS-Word.
Aloha,
